In the Mojave Desert, F-35 jet fighter aircraft dropped 2,000-pound bombs for the first time in recent tests. This is a significant milestone for the F-35 which has been undergoing tests since its first flight in late 2006.
Pilot, U.S. Air Force Maj. Matthew Phillips, released a 2000-pound GBU-31 BLU-109 while the camera is recording the event in super slow motion for analysis and telemetry information sent by the bomb itself. According to Lockheed Martin, the test has been completed successfully.
F-35, known as the Joint Strike Fighter, will be used by the Navy, Marines and Air Force. Three versions of the F-35 being built - that can operate on the carrier, one capable of short takeoffs and vertical landings, and a conventional fighter jets. The three variants of the F-35 will be built by Lockheed in Fort Worth. Central part of the aircraft will be made by Northrop Grumman Corp. in Palmdale.
Lockheed said the F-35 program will pump about $ 6 billion into the state economy and create 27,000 jobs. Department of Defense has plans to buy 2443 aircrafts at a cost of $ 382 billion.
